Kitchen Stories: A film review Kitchens are the heart of the house. It is where memories are made and meals are created. The film Kitchen Stories, by Bent Hamer, is a story about a forward-thinking company’s efforts to gather data to design the perfect and ideal kitchen space. While observing within the kitchen space of a local man's home, we learn about data collection, discipline, power structures, and friendship. Upon his perch, Folke Nilsson watched as Isak Bjorvik lived his life within the confines of mostly the kitchen. At first, Isak was reluctant to let anyone into his life but shortly warmed up to Folke and began to even converse with him. Although fraternization was against the rules of the data collection survey, the two men became friendly and even shared a laugh. Once the company learned of the socializing, they inspected the situation and discovered that Isak had been observing the observer, Folke, as well. This made the decision to shut down the collection of data ...

Brazil: A film review “Paperwork is the embalming fluid of bureaucracy, maintaining an appearance of life where none exists.” (2020) words by Pobert Metzer that truly encompass the bizarre and absurd film Brazil, by Terry Gilliam. In this film, we see a rather complacent man who desires to do the right thing in an amoral world, an underachieving bureaucrat named Sam Lowry, who enjoys spending his days pushing papers. He suddenly “wakes up” and joins the resistance. Along the way, Sam, the dreamer living in an oppressive world, a totalitarian society, discovers the truth and becomes a renegade alongside the AC repairman, Archibald (Harry) Tuttle. Sam and Harry are connected by a paperwork error that sparks Sam to join the resistance and break out of the monotony. The emotions were high and the stakes seemed higher. One wrong move and The Ministry of Truth, government, would drop down from the ceiling and steal you away to be tortured and killed, as we learned in the first scene an...

The China Syndrome The film The China Syndrome, a story about a nuclear power plant, outlines three components: the discovery and presence of an issue; negotiations and development; and the flow of resolution. This film explores the potential dangers surrounding nuclear power and how it is regulated, specifically ethics and oversight. It also highlights corporate greed and cover-ups. Lastly, the film proves the power of the press. Media's influence is powerful and can escalate issues from zero to 100 overnight. This film offers lessons and gives credence to the risks of poorly structured systems and accountability regardless of what is at stake. Reaction This film made me feel fearful of the unknown, specifically nuclear power, and also appreciation of the immense persuasion the media can have over a situation. Coming from a public media background, I understand storytelling and the importance it plays in history. Furthermore, I was drawn in when the film leaned on the media to sa...

Review of the film: The Lorax In the film, The Lorax, there are five main components that stood out to me as important elements to understanding the meaning of the film. These included an environmental warning, capitalism and consumerism, a main character's creativity and mental health struggle, overwhelming industrialization, and a personal campaign. Throughout the film, there was an underlying message about the environment. A warning that things must change because the status quo simply was not working. Examples such as the artificial trees requiring 92 batteries to function, with unnecessary and unnatural features. This is important because it plays into the theme of capitalism and consumerism. The Mayor of Thneed-Ville , Aloysius O'Hare, capitalized on the vicious cycle of selling “clean air” to citizens while promoting various ways of increasing the issue of smog and poor air quality. The norm seemed to be that you would purchase “clean air” like we would purchase filtere...
